2019年5月、「ApexSMS」と呼ばれる大規模なSMSスパム（迷惑メッセージ送信）の活動が報じられました。同名のMongoDBデータベースがパスワードなしで公開状態になっていたことから発覚し、8,000万件を超える記録が漏洩しました。漏洩した中には2,300万件のユニークなメールアドレスのほか、氏名、電話番号と通信キャリア、地域（州・国）、性別、IPアドレスが含まれていました。

In May 2019, news broke of a massive SMS spam operation known as "ApexSMS" which was discovered after a MongoDB instance of the same name was found exposed without a password.
